Ánxelo Maia Rodríguez is a conductor shaped by the European academic tradition and guided by a deep commitment to rigorous and conscious musical work.
Born in Vigo, he began his musical training at an early age, studying cello and piano — instruments that profoundly shaped his understanding of orchestral sound, structure, and phrasing. Alongside his formal musical education, he developed extensive performing experience as both pianist and cellist, participating in concerts, institutional events, and winning international competitions.
He completed his conducting studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC), graduating cum laude and specializing in orchestral conducting. A decisive influence during this period was Jordi Mora, his principal mentor, whose structural and phenomenological approach to the score continues to inform his artistic vision.
His growing interest in the Central European conducting tradition led him to further artistic development in Germany and Austria. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg under Guido Rumstadt and Peter Dijkstra. He has also worked with Eberhard Friedrich or Mark Gibson and receives regular guidance from Konrad von Abel, a direct representative of the pedagogical lineage of Sergiu Celibidache.
Ánxelo’s work is characterized by a meticulous attention to phrasing, sonic balance, and architectural coherence. He approaches music not as an arbitrary phenomenon, but as an internally structured reality that reveals itself through shared musical experience between conductor and orchestra.
Alongside his artistic career, Ánxelo has pursued advanced academic studies in medicine. He completed doctoral research at Heidelberg University focusing on the relationship between music and oncology patients, graduating magna cum laude. This experience has enriched his artistic perspective with analytical depth and humanistic awareness.
In January 2026, he began his medical specialization while continuing his conducting studies.
Ánxelo speaks five languages and works comfortably in international artistic and academic contexts.
